Classification Label Definitions

A classification label is the handling instruction an asset carries: who may receive it, how it is stored, what happens when it is disposed of.

The value score says what an asset is worth. The label says what people must therefore do about it. The first is an assessment; the second is a policy that people act on daily.

Fields

  • Code / Name
The label. Keep the names the ones your policy documents already use.

  • Confidentiality threshold
The confidentiality weight this label corresponds to. This is what drives the suggestion β€” see below.

  • Description
What the label obliges. Worth filling in properly: this is the text somebody reads when deciding whether they may forward a file.

  • Active
Inactive labels are no longer offered.

The shipped set

LabelThresholdMeans
Public1May be disclosed to anyone.
Internal2May be disclosed inside the organization.
Restricted3May be disclosed only to the parties a service involves.
Confidential4May be disclosed only to named recipients.
Strictly Confidential5Disclosure requires explicit approval.

No two labels may share a threshold.

How the suggestion works

When an assessor picks a confidentiality rating, the system offers the label whose threshold equals that rating's weight β€” so a Confidential confidentiality rating suggests the Confidential label.

The suggestion is written only into an empty field:

  • It never overwrites a label somebody has already chosen.
  • Changing the confidentiality rating afterwards does not move it.
note

That single condition is the whole of the rule, and it is deliberate. A classification carries handling obligations, and one that shifted quietly because a rating was corrected could not be explained in an audit. The assessor is free to classify above what the rating suggests β€” a low-confidentiality asset in a sensitive context is a real case β€” and the system will not argue.

Why the threshold rather than the band

The label is suggested from the confidentiality dimension, not from the asset value band. An asset can be highly available and business-critical without being secret; classifying it from the overall value would label it as sensitive when nothing about it is.

Confidentiality is the dimension that governs disclosure, so it is the one the disclosure label follows.

Excel import and export

The list exports to Excel and re-loads from a filled-in template, and rows can be bulk-deleted. A blank code is issued from the list's number template. Bulk delete refuses the whole selection if any row is in use.

tip

Do not invent a parallel scheme here. If your organization already publishes a classification policy, mirror its labels and its wording exactly β€” a second vocabulary means every conversation about a file starts with a translation.
